Fire support symposium september 21st 2023
The war in Ukraine has refocused the armed forces on large-scale combat operations.
For the Army, this means a focus on operating with formations, especially brigades.
After 30 years of stabilization operations, acting with a Dutch brigade, as part of a NATO operation against an adversary such as the Russian Federation, raises questions. Who is the brigade’s specific opponent? What are the time/space factors? How does the brigade implement the operational framework and the concept of connected weapons in deep combat? What does the layering of fire support, from company to LCC level, mean for the brigade-level artillery division? How can the Dutch brigade be successful against the RF army characterized by massive artillery deployment? What role does artillery, or fire support more broadly, have in this?
Because of these and similar questions, the 2023 Fire Support Symposium has the theme:
“Fire Support in contemporary warfighting.
The 2023 focus is “FIRES IN CONTEMPORARY WARFIGHTING,” aligning with the future growth of the fire support system. Growth focuses on several areas of interest:
Solution for degraded operations; Target mesuration; Mortars. Rocket artillery; Ammunition.
Command, Control, Communication, Computers & Information;
Automated target recognition.
Safety; Tech developments regarding fire support; Sensors; Training apps on mobile devices; Augmented reality; Simulation; Quality v Quantity; HR aspects.
